What is poetry?

Inspiration or disaster,
The pen is the master.
Faster and faster
The hand works till it fails.

Hastily scrawling
The images sprawling
The mind's voice drawling
Telling every detail.

Laughter and tears,
Courage and fear,
Some will adhere
And others will sail.

Pages print
The draft is sent
So much feeling went
Into telling this tale.

Poetry is written emotion.

  1. I really enjoyed this a lot! I loved the rhyme scheme. My favorite line was "the pen is the master" I know this is definitely true for me. Sometimes I can't control it, I just start writing without even knowing where it's coming from. Great job!

  2. I love that you chose to write a poem for your definition of poetry! It just seems fitting. I also admire your rhyme scheme, and agree with Brittany that "the pen is the master" is definitely an awesome and well-put line!

  3. "Poetry is written emotion"...agh. YES. Exactly. 100% agree. On the first day of class I wrote that the thing I love about poetry is the emotion; that, more so than with prose, you can read a poem and /see/ the emotion in it, like sudden that feeling has a color and shape and a texture. At least, that's the way I approach poetry.

And on a side, more superficial note:
    Faster and faster
The hand works till it fails.

Awesome. The rhythm here is wonderful. You read "faster and faster" very quickly and by the time you get to "fails" you kind of stop short. Great.
