I'm LaRue, although most people call me Casey. Either one is fine by me.
Don't underestimate me. I may be small but I'm pretty tough.
I have a third degree black belt in American Karate. I've also studied five other forms of martial arts informally.
I perform with an indoor drumline called Pariah, playing fourth bass. The drum is almost as big as me.
I like to sing, but that's not to say I'm any good at it. The same goes for dancing. I love it, but I'm not very talented.
I'm a member of the Iota Delta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma. It's a band service sorority that was founded on March 26, 1946. Our purpose is to help the music department in any way possible.
I've been interested in literature and poetry all my life. I have to say that the poem that best describes my attitude is Invictus by William Ernest Henley:

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the Pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate.
I am the captain of my soul.

  1. I love the poem...one of my best friends was our Valedictorian, and she used it in her speech. I like that you used it in addition to telling us about yourself.

You so don't need to be good at something in order to enjoy it, though, right? Actually, you probably enjoy things more when you know you aren't any good, because then you don't have to worry about impressing anyone but yourself.

  2. Well LaRue...I really like your last name...it sounds really cool when you say it. I really admire people that can play instruments. I love the drum even though I can't play it...I always wanted to learn. I also really enjoyed the poem you included. The last stanza is amazing!

  3. Props on the third degree black belt! That's radical! I have been working towards my black belt in Tae Kwon Do for many years now, my moving habits keep interrupting my training, I have been a red belt since I was 11! And-to answer your question on my blog. I do play instruments. I have the most training in piano, which is my favorite instrument, although I have started to learn guitar and have elementary knowledge of drums and trumpet. Music has always been a big part of my life! :-)It was very neat to read about your indoor drumline! That has to be an amazing experience!

  4. I am so glad to have another class with you! All this time and I had no idea that you played the drums. I love that poem and from what I have gathered it still describes you very well. Can't wait to hear/read more of your work.

  6. It's awesome that you drum. You're clearly a dedicated individual. I couldn't imagine balancing all those activities!
